Dell: SDN won't turn enterprise switches into commodity gear for 3-5 years

Software-defined networking won't turn enterprise switches into an inexpensive commodity until three to five years from now, according to Arpit Joshipura, the former Force10 Networks executive who now manages Dell's networking products.

The original promise of SDN (software-defined networking), which puts most higher-level network functions into software, was to make switches into mere forwarding engines that may be interchangeable and cost far less than they do now, said Joshipura, head of product management and marketing at Dell Networking, at a press briefing on Thursday.

Telephone Numbers

As consumers become more aware of premium rate ‘high cost to call’ numbers it is worth considering the potential implications of using such numbers. Traditionally premium numbers have been used by the adult entertainment industry and corporations using them to promote general consumer products and services such as health care, household goods etc will find response rates reduced compared with well known and accepted numbers such as toll free etc. Although some memorable premium rate numbers may be offered to you for use in an advertising campaign, do consider the downside in response rates and brand perception!

Technology advancements bring information silos out of isolation | Telemarketing & Call Center Solutions | Find Articles at BNET

As global competition intensifies, selling the "right" products at reasonable prices no longer guarantees commercial success. One company's offerings can seem pretty much like another's. To take the lead, companies must fine-tune customer connections and extend customer relationships in new ways. They must differentiate themselves by giving customers faster, more pertinent answers to queries and by addressing each customer's unique set of needs. Call centers become the focus of value-added customer contact, combining all portals to the enterprise including telephone, fax, e-mail and the Web.

Microsoft scores victory in German patent fight with Motorola

Google-owned Motorola Mobility is infringing a Microsoft patent related to text input, a lower regional court in Munich decided on Thursday. The verdict will result in a sales ban on some phones and Motorola will also be liable for damages if an expected appeal is unsuccessful, the court said. For Microsoft, the verdict in Munich -- which is related to patent EP1040406, which describes a method for handling communication between a keyboard and an application -- is a victory in a series of infringement cases against Motorola in Germany.

Best BYOD management: Containment is your friend

Anthony Perkins wants employees at BNY Mellon to bring their personal smartphones to work and use those instead of company-issued BlackBerries to access business email, applications and data.

But there's a catch: Not all employees are comfortable with the prospect of having their personal phones locked down and controlled as tightly as the BlackBerries that Perkins would like to phase out. That's where the notion of containerization comes in.

The 3 biggest mistakes made by security pros

Last week, I discussed the three biggest mistakes senior management makes in computer security. This week, let's examine the three biggest mistakes computer security engineers commit -- and have to answer for when they deal with senior management. You'll notice a resemblance between last week's post and this installment. No coincidence there; the issues are similar, though they differ in the details.

Cloud adoption pushes storage virtualization

About three years ago Host.net, a collocation and managed service provider, decided it was going to fully embrace the cloud as a new suite of offerings for customers. When migrating to the new service, the company wanted to use its legacy hardware infrastructure -- mostly Dell and EMC storage servers -- with new hardware that had been purchased for the upgrade. But they didn't want to be tied down to any one vendor moving forward, in case application needs or markets changed.
