The all-in cloud architecture of tomorrow
Not all of us pundits at InfoWorld agree with each other, but regular readers can put together a kind of consensus architecture. That consensus represents the state of our industry and the thought leadership that is working to determine its near-future direction. As we approach the end of the year and finish off the first dirty dozen of the 2000s, it's useful to consider what lies ahead if we actually do everything we talk about. For me, this extends to a New Year's resolution: I plan to practice what we preach in 2013 and move to an all-in cloud architecture.
Evolving security standards a challenge for cloud computing
Any enterprise looking to use cloud computing services will also be digging into what laws and regulations might hold in terms of security and privacy of data stored in the cloud. How to choose the right type of colocation center
Although two of the most quoted reasons for moving infrastructure into the cloud are scalability and elasticity, another reason organizations might consider the cloud is to avoid the painfully expensive costs of building and maintaining a highly available data center. More typically, to get higher control and more customization, organizations choose to house their infrastructures in a third-party data center or colocation center that offers better protection than the company could afford on its own.

ICANN to hold gTLD domain raffle
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has proposed holding an old-fashioned raffle to determine which applications for new top-level domains should be handled first. To make the lottery legal, the organization hopes to use a loophole in Californian law.
ICANN was planning to use a "Digital Archery" contest to determine which applications for a new Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) such as ".security", ".beer" or ".download" should be evaluated first. A system like this is needed because not all the 1,923 gTLD applications can be handled at once.

Do the virtualization math: When four CPUs aren't four CPUs
One of the major advantages of virtualization is the ability to dynamically add CPU and RAM to running virtual machines. Have a box that gets a sudden spike? Add more RAM on the fly and let it go. It's a fantastic way to deal with certain compute issues, and it can make a tough decision disappear due to the fact that downtime and reboots aren't required.
However, allocating CPU and RAM with the click of a mouse -- dynamically or otherwise -- can have deleterious effects on your servers in some circumstances. You really need to understand your workload and your OS.

How big data will separate haves from have-nots
When the Internet and the World Wide Web first gained momentum in the 1990s, words like "email" and "e-commerce" entered the popular lexicon. (In fact, a lowercase "e" became a symbol of all things electronic.) The dot-com boom and bust cycle played out in what has since come to be known as Internet time. Entire industries were created and decimated in the span of a decade. Today, it's hard to imagine either a business or personal life without the Internet and the Web.
