The all-in cloud architecture of tomorrow

Not all of us pundits at InfoWorld agree with each other, but regular readers can put together a kind of consensus architecture. That consensus represents the state of our industry and the thought leadership that is working to determine its near-future direction. As we approach the end of the year and finish off the first dirty dozen of the 2000s, it's useful to consider what lies ahead if we actually do everything we talk about. For me, this extends to a New Year's resolution: I plan to practice what we preach in 2013 and move to an all-in cloud architecture.

If your company offers customers a facility to call up and request collection of an unwanted product, train your agents in all aspects of customer care and sales. Here’s why.

It could be a product, which is faulty and maybe this has upset the customer in which case care is needed. Or it could be the product was not used or unsuitable, in which case sales skills could help identify the exact product the customer needs and could result in one return being followed up with a shipment of a different product. Either way the net result is a happy customer.

Although two of the most quoted reasons for moving infrastructure into the cloud are scalability and elasticity, another reason organizations might consider the cloud is to avoid the painfully expensive costs of building and maintaining a highly available data center. More typically, to get higher control and more customization, organizations choose to house their infrastructures in a third-party data center or colocation center that offers better protection than the company could afford on its own.

Do the virtualization math: When four CPUs aren't four CPUs

One of the major advantages of virtualization is the ability to dynamically add CPU and RAM to running virtual machines. Have a box that gets a sudden spike? Add more RAM on the fly and let it go. It's a fantastic way to deal with certain compute issues, and it can make a tough decision disappear due to the fact that downtime and reboots aren't required.

However, allocating CPU and RAM with the click of a mouse -- dynamically or otherwise -- can have deleterious effects on your servers in some circumstances. You really need to understand your workload and your OS.

To survive the PC's decline, Intel just might adopt ARM

Remember how bad sales of chips were during the financial meltdown of 2008? Well, they were a lot worse this year, two years into the supposed recovery from the recession. Indeed, the number of CPUs sold in the last quarter were the worst in a decade, according to Mercury Research, a boutique research shop specializing in the chip industry. Year-over-year sales were down 9.3 percent in the third quarter, compared to an 8.8 percent drop in the last quarter of 2008 as the recession hit hard.

Leaving Messages For Customers

It is very frustrating to receive an answer phone message from a large corporation that simply says “This is Lisa from XX (International Airline) please call us when you hear this”. This what I picked up from my home answer phone – there are probably several Lisa’s in the company, there is no number to call (I know they have several) or any reference of any kind!

If your agents make outbound calls, have a script for leaving messages or train them on what details to leave.

Ask For Feedback

When your agents speak with customers, this is often a great time to ask for feedback on a whole range of subjects. For example asking a caller what they thought of your marketing materials, if that helped generate the response, will give you useful feedback for the marketing department. Activities like this also help you provide more value to other parts of the business and raise the contact center profile.

Translation Of Scripts

In this age of multilingual contact centers, scripts often need to be translated. However sometime the meaning can be lost through poor translation. It is good practice to have native speakers read scripts that have been translated and ask them for their understanding of the meaning of the message. Don’t just rely on one person – have several native speakers review them.

Moving beyond Hadoop for big data needs

Hadoop and MapReduce have long been mainstays of the big data movement, but some companies now need new and faster ways to extract business value from massive -- and constantly growing -- datasets.

While many large organizations are still turning to the open source Hadoop big data framework, its creator, Google, and others have already moved on to newer technologies.

NoSQL is no Oracle killer

Like many people, I cheer any sign of Oracle's downfall and chuckle at the thought of Larry Ellison having some misadventure on the high seas. Who doesn't? But the sad fact is that, despite all the buildup, NoSQL and big data do not threaten Oracle or the RDBMS paradigm in the near term.

On the other hand, there's a decent chance NoSQL will take a big bite out of Oracle RAC (Real Application Clusters). Here's why.

How big data will separate haves from have-nots

When the Internet and the World Wide Web first gained momentum in the 1990s, words like "email" and "e-commerce" entered the popular lexicon. (In fact, a lowercase "e" became a symbol of all things electronic.) The dot-com boom and bust cycle played out in what has since come to be known as Internet time. Entire industries were created and decimated in the span of a decade. Today, it's hard to imagine either a business or personal life without the Internet and the Web.
